The Role of the Tutor
A student’s relationship with their tutor is central to their success, to the resolution of any difficulties they encounter and their successful application to work, university or further education beyond Sixth Form. It will be the tutor that guides students through this and writes their reference. This relationship is built through registration and core lessons and so attendance at these are compulsory. It will be through the tutor that students hear important messages, and they will meet individually with their tutor at least three times in the year to review their progress.
In addition to registration, tutors will teach students once a fortnight in a lesson called Values in Practise (VIP), which provides study skills support, personal development and progression support.
Extended Tutor: On four mornings throughout the year, students will also have extended tutor sessions which include subject mentoring, PSHE and student finance.
Key Worker Support
Two Learning Mentors (based in the support hub on the 3rd floor) are available to support students with a whole range of problems. These might be of an academic nature, such as time management or meeting deadlines, or more general issues, such as course changes, planning for employment or Higher Education or concerns about personal wellbeing. Learning Mentors are not intended to replace the work of a tutor – they would normally be used “as well as”, rather than “instead of”. Normally, a tutor will refer students for this if it is felt it would help, but if they are free, a student can drop in for a chat.

The Pastoral and Student Welfare Officer (based in the pastoral office opposite G10) supports those who need more immediate or regular pastoral care and with a range of welfare needs.
