We Value Justice and Respect 3 2025

Weekly Worship from Chaplain Josh.

This week’s ALIVE value is that we value Justice and Respect.’ We demonstrate that this month as we continue to celebrate and focus on Black History Month.

Black History Month has been observed since 1987, and it aims to celebrate and honour the contributions and struggles of people of African and Caribbean heritage have made to British and global society.

The theme this year, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” reminds us that we are called to stand strong in who we are, and to treat others with the same respect and justice we wish for ourselves.

To “stand firm” means to hold your ground. To stay true to your values even when things are difficult. For many who fought against racism and injustice, standing firm meant speaking out when it wasn’t easy, or holding onto hope when change felt far away.

“Power and pride” is about confidence, self-respect, and knowing your worth. It reminds us that every person is made in the image of God. We are all unique, precious, and worthy of respect.

Let’s remember Paul Stephenson, who in 1963, organised the Bristol Bus Boycott. With courage and persistence, inspired by the civil rights movement and his Christian faith, Paul led peaceful protests until the company finally changed its policy. This year marks 60 years since the Race Relations Act, which Paul Stephenson’s actions inspired.

As a school community, we believe in a God who delights in His beautifully diverse creation and calls us to stand together against hate, discrimination, and injustice in all its forms. When we walk in that truth, we can use our power to uplift others, and our pride to celebrate who we are and the gifts God has placed within us.

What does it mean to “stand firm” in your beliefs or values?

How can we show justice and respect to one another in our tutor group and school community?

Let’s Pray
God of love and justice,
thank You for those who came before us —
for their courage, their strength, and their faith.
Help us to stand firm in power and pride,
to value one another with respect,
and to use our voices for what is right.
May our actions bring hope, healing, and peace.
Amen.
