Celebrating Black History Month 2026
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month along with the rest of the UK, we think about honouring many people in our communities.
Your contribution to your community has nothing to do with how famous you are, but rather the difference you make.
The lady in this picture is the Right Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover. She was born in Jamaica and felt called to Christian ministry when she was 14 years old. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first Black Bishop to be appointed in the Church of England. She has also worked at the Houses of Parliament leading prayers.
Here is an ITV News interview with her. Where she explains her values and a little bit more about what she believes:
Her life reminds us that community is not simply where we live. It is how we choose to care for one another, stand up for one another and ensure that no one is left behind. She has been a role model but she wants to use her position to bring about change.
The Bible says,
Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it. 1 John 3:18
Have a discussion with each other about how we can live like Reverend Rose and show how much we care for each other through our actions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for our communities. Thank you that we can love and care for each other through our actions and in doing this we become more like you. We are grateful for the example of Reverend Rose. Help us to make sure that no-one is left behind as we stand up for one another. Amen
