We are Resilient

Weekly Worship from Chaplain Josh.

As we kick off a new year together, one word we’re focusing on ‘We Are Resilient’.

Turn to someone near you and chat for a moment: What do you think resilience means?

Resilience is about not giving up when things get tough. It’s about getting back up when you fall, learning from mistakes, and choosing to keep going – even when you don’t feel like it.

We’re going to watch a short clip where football legend Harry Kane talks about resilience:

Harry’s journey wasn’t easy. He didn’t start his career by winning trophies or being famous. He faced rejection, setbacks, and moments where he seriously doubted himself. But one thing that stuck with him was his dad’s advice:

“We go again and work even harder: let’s see where it takes us.”

That phrase “we go again” is powerful.

Whatever last year was like for you, this year is a chance to go again. Maybe last term was stressful. Maybe friendships were hard. Maybe you didn’t get the grades you wanted, or your confidence took a hit. Even if yesterday or last year didn’t go how you hoped, it doesn’t get the final word.

You get a fresh start. You get another chance to try, to grow, and to see where this year takes you. I truly believe you can achieve great things this year.

The Bible reminds us of this in Isaiah 43:2:

“When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end.”

This verse doesn’t promise a perfect or easy life. Instead, it promises God’s presence in the hard moments. It reminds us that resilience isn’t about being strong all the time - it’s about trusting that God is with us, even when things feel overwhelming.

Being resilient means choosing to go again, knowing that setbacks don’t define you and tough seasons don’t last forever.

Let’s have a chat:

  1. What stood out to you from Harry Kane’s story?
  2. Have you ever had a moment where you wanted to give up but didn’t? What helped you keep going?
  3. What does “we go again” look like in your life right now – school, friendships, family, or faith?
  4. How does knowing God is with you change the way you face challenges?

Prayer

God, thank You for bringing us into a new year. Thank You that even when things are hard, You never leave us. Help us to be resilient, to get back up when we fall and to keep going when things feel tough. When we feel overwhelmed, remind us that You are with us in the rough
