We Can Communicate

Weekly Worship from Chaplain Josh.
Today we think about our ALIVE Value ‘We can Communicate.’
Which restaurant or fast-food chain do you think does the best fries? McDonald’s, KFC, Five Guys, or Nando’s?
My favourite at the moment is definitely Nando’s, especially because of the peri-salt seasoning you can add to the chips. To me, this is a game changer! It adds so much flavour and completely transforms them.
The Bible also speaks about “seasoning” in a famous passage:
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.Colossians 4:6
At first, it might sound a bit strange that the Bible talks about our conversations being “seasoned with salt,” but when we understand it, it makes a lot of sense.
In Bible times, salt was used to:
- Add flavour – making food better, not bland
- Preserve food – stopping it going bad
- Clean and heal wounds – it can sting, but it helps healing
So when the Bible uses the phrase “seasoned with salt,” it is saying our words should be like salt in food. They should add something good and valuable to what we say, not just fill silence or come out thoughtlessly.
It also suggests that our conversations should be carefully thought about, just like a chef chooses the right amount of seasoning. Words can easily be too harsh or too bland, but “salted” words are the ones that are wise, helpful, and meaningful.
So when it says our conversation should be “seasoned with salt,” it means:
- Our words should be interesting, wise, and helpful
- Not bland, careless, or thoughtless
- Not cruel or “rotten,” but truthful and kind
- Sometimes honest words may “sting,” but if spoken in love, they can help people grow
Have a think and a chat with those around you:
- Am I careful about speaking kindly and wisely to others?
- Do my words bring grace or do they upset people?
- How can I “add salt” to my conversations this week?
