Pentecost

Weekly Worship from Chaplain Josh.

On Thursday morning, we’ll be heading over to Redcliffe Church for our Pentecost Service.

But… what is Pentecost?

Pentecost might sound like a strange word—it’s not one we use every day. But it marks a key moment in Christian history: the time when Christians believe God sent the Holy Spirit to be with Jesus' followers, starting a new chapter for the Church.

Do you know the story?

Jesus' followers were all gathered together in a room, unsure about what life without Jesus around them would be like. Suddenly, they heard a sound like a rushing wind, and something that looked like flames appeared above their heads. It didn’t burn them—but it was a powerful sign. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages.

People from all over the world were in the city at the time, and they were amazed to hear the message in their own language. One of Jesus' followers, Peter, stood up and explained: this was the Holy Spirit—God’s Spirit—now with them, just like Jesus had promised.

Take a second to imagine how that must have felt.
A roaring wind rushing through a room… flames appearing from nowhere… and suddenly being able to speak languages you’ve never spoken before!

For Jesus' followers, it was a clear message: God was still with them, even though Jesus had gone back to heaven. He was guiding them into what was next.

In the Bible, wind and fire are often used to describe some important situations: Often, when God is showing He is present, and/or a new place to meet with God is being made (in the Bible this was the temples).

So, what does Pentecost show us today?

  1. God is with us—always. Christians believe the Holy Spirit is God's way of being present, guiding and helping us each day.
  2. We are like temples. In the Bible, temples were where people met with God. Now, Christians believe people—not buildings—are where God lives and works through love, peace, and kindness.

Pentecost shows that God isn't far away or hidden in a holy place—he lives in us, giving us power to love, speak up, and bring hope wherever we go.

Let’s pray!

Loving God,
As we remember Pentecost, we thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Fill us with your love, your wisdom, and your courage.
We pray that our Pentecost Service on Thursday will be full of joy as we celebrate your goodness and the many nations and cultures in our school community.

Amen.
