We Are Resilient 1

Though we experience every kind of pressure, we’re not crushed. At times we don’t know what to do, but quitting is not an option. We are persecuted by others, but God has not forsaken us. We may be knocked down, but not out.Corinthians 4:8-9

One of my favourite quotes is ‘There is so much stubborn hope in the human heart.’ In other words, as humans, we have something in us that drives us to get back up when we fall, and to try again when we don’t succeed. We don’t tend to give up easily. But what is this force that pushes us to not give up? It’s resilience. The meaning of the word resilience is ‘to spring back’. Something can only spring back when it’s had pressure placed upon it. So it is with us. We will never know how truly resilient we are unless we go through difficult and challenging things.

Here’s an inspiring short story about resilience:

"Go to the ant." Tammerlane used to tell his friends a story about his early life. "I once," he said, "was forced to take shelter from my enemies in a ruined building, where I sat alone for many hours. Desiring to take my mind off of my hopeless condition, I fixed my eyes on an ant that was carrying a grain of corn larger than itself up a high wall. I numbered the efforts it made to accomplish this object. The grain fell sixty-nine times to the ground; but the insect persevered, and the seventieth time it reached the top. This sight gave me courage at that moment, and I never forgot the lesson.”

Father God,
Thank you that you’re always with us in every situation. Because of this, we can be confident that no matter what life throws our way, we go can always spring back and move forward. Help us to be more aware of this, and to trust your presence in our lives which is always and forever. Amen
