I Am Questioning

One of my favourite quotes is, ‘When the Almighty asks you a question, He isn’t looking for an answer’. After all, God knows everything.

But in the Bible, there are many times when Jesus would ask people a question. Here are some examples:

Do you believe that I am able to do this? (Matthew 9:28)

What is your name? (Mark 5:9)

Why are you sleeping? (Luke 22:46)

Do you love me? (John 21:17)

When Jesus asked these questions, each person had to respond. But their response wasn’t to inform him; it was to inform themselves. When God asks us questions, it’s not so that he’ll learn more, but so that we will.

What questions may God be asking you today? And how will you answer them? Remember, God already knows everything there is to know about you. According to Psalm 139, he is ‘familiar with all my ways’ (v3).

When I was studying in Redcliffe Sixth Form centre years ago, burning with so many questions my head could explode, former Chaplain Joey passed this song on to me. May it bless you this week and beyond:

Let this be our prayer:

‘God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and sift through all my anxious cares. See if there is any path of pain I’m walking on, and lead me back to your glorious, everlasting ways – the path that brings me back to you.’ (Psalm 139:23-24) (TPT)
