I Am Interdependent 2

STARTER: What is individualism and what are the advantages and disadvantages of it?

One of the big problems of individualism is that can lead us to think only about ourselves or the ones close to us, which can leave us blind to the problems of the wider community, city, and world we’re in.

When Jesus was asked what is the most important command from God, he responded by telling them:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[c]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]

Luke 10:27

When people asked ‘who is my neighbour?’ he answered with the story of the good Samaritan. Take a look at this retelling:

For anything to change, it needs many hands, but it also needs brave individuals to be the first to stand. Where do you see need to be the good Samaritan? What would it look like to be a school, and a city, where people step in and peacefully challenge whenever we see bullying, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, or any kind of discrimination?

Of course, it’s up to you whether you want to do this! To quote another philosopher:

You can’t tell someone what to do with their life, but you can advise them, so they can be greater.

Let us act and let us pray:
Father of all creation
Let us become like Jesus who reached across the ethnic boundaries, who offered fresh sight to the blind and freedom to captives. Forgive us for our selfishness and apathy, our silence and fear. Help us to break down the barriers in our community, enable us to see the reality of discrimination and free us to challenge and uproot it from ourselves, our society and our world. We commit to stepping up, standing up, and speaking up. Amen.

Take time to reflect on the song STAND UP from ‘Harriet’, a 2019 film about a freedom fighter in the 1840s.

This Wednesday Lent is upon us! Lent is the 40 days before Easter, the Christian celebration of life. We at SMRT, would like to engage in the #livelent campaign, that will help us learn about the gift of creation and how we can better care for it.

Each week there will be theme, with a reading and a prayer, and then each day there will be practical challenges for you to engage in as a tutor, and as individuals.

This week’s theme is beginnings:
Read Psalm 100, and consider how we too can care for the whole earth.
Ash Wednesday – FAST - Jesus spent 40 days fasting, today can you give up one thing to help the environment?
Thursday – THANK - God is not just concerned about people but all the earth - Thank God for something in creation!
Friday – PRAY- for the needs of our world, for the whole of life including animals and plants
Weekend – CARE- look after something living this weekend – sow some seeds, take care of a pet, feed the bird, and remember that God cares for all things

Prayer: Thank you God for making this wonderful world.
Be with us this lent and help us to love you and care for your creation.
