Music

All pupils in Years 7-9 have two class music lessons every fortnight.  The focus is on four key skills; Listening, Appraising, Composing and Performing.  All students sing, play keyboard instruments and learn how to read, notate and analyse music.  In Year 7, they study the principles of structure, harmony, melody and timbre through a series of projects such as Graphic Score, Programme Music, Musique Concrète and Reggae. All pupils in Years 7-9 have two class music lessons every fortnight.  The focus is on four key skills; Listening, Appraising, Composing and Performing.  All students sing, play keyboard instruments and learn how to read, notate and analyse music.  In Year 7, they study the principles of structure, harmony, melody and timbre through a series of projects such as Graphic Score, Programme Music, Musique Concrète and Reggae. Throughout the year, there is a focus on notation and identifying compositional techniques. 


In years 8 and 9, they study a broad range of topics including Modernism (Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Bartok), Indian Classical Music, Klezmer, Song Writing, Film Music, The Blues, Musicals & Opera, Electronic Dance Music and complete a special focus on the music of the French 20th Century Christian composer, Olivier Messiaen. These studies involve academic study of musical, historical and social context and analysis of compositional techniques, as well as original composing and development of performing skills.
